Letter From The Editor:
Dear
Friends of Healthy Thoughts,
Happy Autumn!
What an amazing season we have in front of us. As I write these
words the geese are calling to each other as they fly over my
home. Expressing such excitement in their flight, they encourage
each other by singing to the season in anticipation of their
long journey to warmer shores. They gather in groups along the
rivers, the lakes and fields, waiting for the signs that let
them know it is time to go. I too am waiting for the signs. The
frost will come and take my garden to bed. The leaves will turn
and fall to the earth to cover my yard with its blanket for the
coming winter rest. There will be many shifts and turns of the
weather. I have begun to stack the wood, the chimney is cleaned
and I wear an extra layer of clothing on my bike in the
mornings. Then, I wake up and find myself able to walk in my
garden bare foot, the sky is bright and as the sun beats down on
my shoulders I once again feel the air of summer. One more
chance to dance in the warmth of the summer season leaving, yet
lingering as if reluctant to say good bye.
This season always reminds me of the constance of change. Each
day brings something different. Just as each movement in my life
brings something new and different. Each breath I take is new,
each meeting of a new friend or a old trusted ally is fresh.
That freshness comes from within, it is there because I see it,
and embrace it. When we cling to having things stay the same, or
push away what we do not want, we suffer. Much like the big old
tree in my backyard not clinging to its green leaves in the
middle of the winter, I cannot cling to my youth, my health or
even the breath that comes and goes from my body. The tree
dances with the seasons, and I dance with the ever changing tide
of change.
Love and peace to you all.
Kathleen

Reach
for the Stars
by Shelley Riutta MSE, LPC
I love
the phrase “Reach for the Stars!” It conjures up images
for me of magic and seems to open the doorway to amazing
possibilities. We typically are not taught to reach for
the stars. We are not encouraged to dream big dreams. We
are for the most part taught to instead keep our dreams
small and contained—following the typical societal
roadmap for success: go to college in an area that you
can make money, maybe in an area you enjoy—and then
pursue this career path, find a life partner, possibly
have a family. This is not bad—it may even lead to an
enjoyable life—but what if there was more? |

Agile
Living By
Jeanne Loehnis
It seems that the
American way of life is changing rapidly. Fifty years
ago, education was about planning for a career which
often lasted until age 65 when we could retire. Today,
it is very likely that the job we were doing just 10
years ago is no longer needed, at least not in the same
way that we were trained to do it. As for retiring at
65, that is likely not feasible from a financial
perspective. And “sit around and rest retirement” is not
even healthy! The active senior is happier, healthier,
joyously contributing to society, and likely, “agile”.

Who
Am I?
Rev. Etienne Pait
Perhaps what and how we do anything comes
from a direct correlation of how we perceive ourselves.
How often do we define who we are as a name, a role, a
relationship, a fan, a nationality, a color, a status, a
member, and so on and so on, ad nauseam? |

New Help for Joint Pain and Stiffness
By
Steve Lankford
It is important to understand that all of
the different nutrients that are often recommended for
joint pain are all different compounds with different
properties and effects. And even though they each may be
helpful in some way, their modes of action are different
and the degree of benefit will vary greatly. Because
each person is unique, the best solution for restoring
health will vary and your challenge is to discover what
works best for you. |

Buying the Best Appliances
Would you like
cleaner clothes, a cozier home, lower utility bills, and
to be a leader in curbing climate change? Then consider
replacing your old appliances with new, energy-and
water-efficient versions. The US consumes nearly one
million dollars worth of energy every minute, according
to the Department of Energy (DOE). By choosing
high-efficiency appliances over conventional models,
last year’s US consumers saved $12 billion on utility
bills and avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to
23 million cars. Get in on the energy savings with the
strategic appliance advice we’ve gathered for you here. |
YOUR CREATIVE SPIRIT: CIRCLES
By Mary Curran
There are many ways to gather the
loose parts of your self, to restore, refocus, and
reintegrate. Whether you’ve had a challenging day, face
life-changing events, or go on about the familiarities
of the day to day, you probably have methods that you
use (sleep, walking, music, prayer, meditation, yoga,
tai chi, chi gong, dance, a circle of friends, a visit
to a special place, and so on). |
Dear
Dream Lady: I’ve
had several powerful dreams lately. Maybe you could use
this one as an example of a dreamer who figures it out
on his own; since you always say that “the dreamer is
the best interpreter of the dream.”

Eat Less Meat, Cool the Planet
Tracy Fernandez
Rysavy
When you take into
account meat’s entire lifecycle, each meat eater is
responsible for 1.5 more tons of greenhouse gases than a
vegan per year, according to a study by the University
of Chicago. By contrast, switching from a Toyota Camry
to a hybrid Toyota Prius would save one ton of
greenhouse gases annually. |

Hidden Dangers - Microwave Cooking
By Susan Klingeisen

Millions of people
are ignorantly sacrificing their health in exchange for
convenience. The Soviet Union banned the use of
microwave ovens in 1976, why? The purpose of this
article is to show that microwave cooking is not healthy
and is in fact far more dangerous than you could
imagine. However, microwave oven manufacturers,
Washington politics and plain old human nature are
suppressing the facts. Because of this people continue
to microwave their food – in blissful ignorance –
without knowing the effects and dangers of doing so. |

IS YOUR CELL PHONE MAKING YOU FAT?
by Christine Riemer
FIRST, a national women’s magazine, features a story in
its October 2007 issue titled, "Electromagnetic Forces
Are Making Women Fat!" The story reveals that
researchers worldwide are discovering an unwanted side
effect of modern-day
conveniences like cell phones, computers, microwave
ovens, TVs, power lines, and the wireless ipods, PDAs,
bluetooths, and laptops. "The electromagnetic fields (EMFs)
they emit are creating an ‘electromagnetic smog’ called
electropollution that’s making people sick–and fat!" |
IT BEGINS WITH A THOUGHT
We say things to people all the time
and what we say affects them. When we speak to our
children, it is important to say those things we want to
imprint on their minds and hearts. Here are some words
that we can think and say that are important to impart.
I want you. I love you. I’ll take care of you. I’ll be
there for you. I love who you are. I appreciate your
courage. I appreciate your creativity. I see you and
hear you. You can trust your inner voice. I have
confidence in you. You are special to me and I am proud
of you. I give you permission to make mistakes. I give
you permission to be the same as I am, or more than I
am, or less than I am. I appreciate that you are unique
and special. |

Mortgages for Energy Efficiency
Andrew Korfhage
With the EEM, the Theards’ down
payment stayed the same, their monthly mortgage payment
increased slightly, and the house’s energy bills dropped
considerably. The bottom line is that the Theards are
saving about $45 a month over what they would have been
spending on a lower mortgage with no improvements—and
they’re using less energy every day. |
